Fluoride: Myths & Facts

Fluoride is a natural mineral found in water and foods. Most people already consume fluoride through water, foods, drinks, and dental products. Unfortunately, there are many myths regarding fluoride. Do you know the myths from facts?

Myth:

People who drink fluoridated water will develop fluorosis.

Fact:

Only exposure to high fluoride concentrations over long periods can increase the chance of fluorosis. Dental fluorosis is a condition that can change the appearance of tooth enamel.

Typically, white spots on the teeth or, in more severe cases of fluorosis, enamel changes like pits in the teeth occur. Fortunately, the condition has not been reported to affect other parts of oral health.

Myth:

Fluoride treatment is dangerous for children.

Fact:

Fluoride treatment is a safe and effective way to help prevent cavities from developing. Fluoride is naturally found in water sources and foods, making it likely that your child has had fluoride exposure already. Since fluoride strengthens the tooth enamel, enough fluoride during childhood is critical to developing strong teeth over a lifetime.

Myth:

Fluoride treatment is ineffective at preventing tooth decay.

Fact:

While dental products like toothpaste or mouthwash contain traces of fluoride, the amounts are not sufficient to avoid fluoride treatment. Even though teeth are healthier than ever thanks to advanced dental technology, many individuals suffer from decay or weak enamel that can decay quickly.

During fluoride treatment, a dentist like Dr. Sekhon coats the enamel with a varnish that helps strengthen and protect teeth long after it is washed away.
