For many people, braces are a pivotal part of their dental journey. They straighten and align the teeth, delivering a healthy and beautiful smile that allows for lasting self-confidence. Though commonly placed at a young age, braces are an option for both children and adults. Read on to learn more about getting braces for your child, or anyone else in your family–maybe even yourself!
Is My Child Ready for Braces?
You learned at a young age that everyone’s personality, preferences, and life history are unique. That rings true for everyone’s smile too! For some of us, teeth grow in near-perfectly straight, while others may develop an overbite, crowded teeth, or teeth that are only slightly crooked. These factors, and their timing, influence a child’s need for braces braces.
We recommend bringing your child in to Growing Smiles Pediatric and Family Dentistry for an orthodontic consultation by the age of seven. That way, we are able to spot and track issues early and get a sense of if, why, and when braces will be needed. It’s common for kids to get braces between the ages of 10 and 14. The permanent teeth should be all or mostly grown in, and the head and jaw are still growing, making the teeth more adaptable to orthodontics. However, the commencement and duration of braces varies for every patient, and we will prescribe the appropriate timeline for your child based on their unique smile and oral history.
Adult Braces
Keep in mind that braces aren’t just for kids! If you’re dissatisfied with your teeth as an adult, it is by no means too late for you to get braces. Often times, it isn’t actually until adulthood that a person wants, needs, and/or can afford to have braces. There are many treatment options available, including traditional metal braces and clear aligners, that can help you achieve straight teeth and all the confidence that comes with them, at any age.
