What Are the Benefits of a Straighter Smile?

There are lots of benefits to a straighter smile that go further than just looks! Many people find that perfectly aligned teeth boosts their self-confidence and helps them make better first impressions. Straight teeth are also easier to brush and floss since there aren’t as many hard-to-reach spots for bacteria to get stuck in. Correcting a misaligned bite can even alleviate many of the symptoms of TMJ/TMD disorder. Crooked teeth often get worn down unevenly, increasing the likelihood of needing restorative work in the future.

If you don’t want to spend the next couple of years in metal braces, have you ever considered Invisalign? Invisalign are a custom-designed series of comfortable, plastic aligner trays that gently and gradually move your teeth over time.

One of the main benefits of Invisalign over traditional braces, besides being nearly invisible, is that the aligner trays are removable. You can take out your trays for short periods of time without affecting your treatment. Additionally, there are no food restrictions with Invisalign. Plus, flossing and brushing is not obstructed by metal wires.

Invisalign is a popular choice among adults and older teens who don’t want metal braces interfering with their busy personal lives. If invisible aligners sound more enticing than metal ones, then schedule a consultation at Growing Smiles!

Benefits of Invisalign

  • Discreet, Nearly Invisible Aligners
  • Removable
  • Fewer Appointments
  • Increased Comfort
  • Healthier Teeth & Gums

If you need to make a major adjustment to your teeth or bite, then traditional braces may be your best option. Thanks to new technology and advanced materials, modern braces have made many improvements in recent years—in addition to using thinner and more durable wires, they also feature smaller, more comfortable brackets. They are a good option for teens and adults, alike. Find out more about when your child might be ready for braces.

Another option is ceramic braces. Ceramic braces use tooth-colored brackets that give a more subtle appearance. They’re a very popular option for both teens and adults.

Braces For Kids

Getting braces is an important milestone in your child’s oral health. Children’s braces can correct issues like overcrowding, misalignment, or issues with chewing or speaking before your child becomes accustomed to the dental issue. If your child needs braces, traditional or ceramic ones are often the best types for kids as they require more frequent dental appointments and adjustments. The more our orthodontist keeps an eye on your child’s teeth, the more encouragement they have to care for their teeth during orthodontic treatment as children’s braces are just as big of a commitment as other orthodontic appliances!

We provide a variety of appliance therapies to ensure your child grows up with a healthy smile. If your kid has lost a tooth early, we can design a custom space maintainer for them to wear so that the gap is kept open until the permanent tooth comes in. Space maintainers work to guide proper tooth development so your child’s teeth don’t shift into the open space and pose future problems (like misalignment or crowding).

Another type of appliance we offer is habit breakers. These are designed to stop habits like thumb-sucking and tongue thrusting, both of which can cause serious damage to your child’s dental health. We also create retainers to be worn after finishing orthodontic treatment. These keep teeth in their new, straighter positions and maintain all the hard work done with braces or Invisalign.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the braces procedure take?

For most patients, getting braces put on takes anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. The process varies depending on each patients’ needs and we strive to make it as comfortable as possible. We’ll start by cleaning and drying off your teeth. Then, we’ll use an extra-strength adhesive to attach the brackets before connecting them with a wire.

When should I consider getting braces?

Once most or all of the permanent teeth are in, a patient can get braces. However, a consultation will provide you with more insight into whether or not braces are the right choice for you. Some kids start braces around 7 years of age and some people wait until their teen or adult years. Every patient and situation is different. Contact our office to book your consultation!

What are the key differences between the main tooth straightening options?

The two most common straightening options are aligners and braces. Their main differences are that aligners resemble clear, plastic retainer trays that straighten teeth in two-week increments. Aligners discreetly straighten teeth and they can be taken out to eat, brush, and floss. Traditional braces cannot be removed and are more noticeable than aligners. However, traditional braces can treat more complex orthodontic cases.

How do I care for my Invisalign aligners?

Since you wear your aligners every day, your aligners need to be regularly washed to avoid bacteria buildup. To clean your aligners, you can gently brush the inside of them with your toothbrush and some toothpaste, or you can get a retainer/aligner cleaning solution to disinfect your aligners.

How do I choose between Invisalign and braces?

Each orthodontic treatment has its own benefits. It also depends heavily on the severity of your alignment issues, your age and budget, and many other variables. At your consultation, we’ll thoroughly go over your options and recommend which treatment is best for you based on your needs!
